we appreciate that those coming from work may not be able to arrive until
later. From 7pm until 8.30pm, there will be an exclusive viewing of both the
special exhibition of the work of Jacques Henri Lartigue and the
ground-breaking contemporary exhibition, "About Face". After the private
view as well as before, guests will have plenty of time to share drinks and
socializing with like-minded enthusiasts. |

Jacques Henri Lartigue - From the early age of 6, Lartigue obsessively
photographed his family and friends, building up an extraordinary archive of
photo albums over 80 years, a unique and compelling record of an epoch.
French high society at play, fashionable beauties, the Cote d'Azur, motor
racing exploits and early experiments in flight: Lartigue captured them all
with breathtaking ease and vitality, revealing himself as an innocent
modernist, an innate genius with the camera.
About Face - A new generation of artists and photographers challenge the
conventions of the photographic portrait in this exploration of the 'face'.
The works in About Face reveal a wide range of approaches from
'straightforward' photography, photomontage, appropriation of found imagery
and multiple exposures to complex computer manipulations and challenging our
perceptions of beauty and truth. In an age of digital technology and media
domination, miracle drugs, plastic surgery and genetic engineering, the
artists ask can we still take the portrait at face value?
The Venue - The
Hayward, a purpose-built, modern art gallery, was opened by Her Majesty The
Queen in 1968. It is considered an icon of sixties ‘brutalist’ architecture.
The Gallery plays a vital role in the visual arts in the UK and
internationally. As one of the largest and most versatile temporary art
exhibition spaces in Britain, it has proved remarkably adaptable in
presenting a wide range of ground-breaking exhibitions over more than thirty
years. |
